Abstract At the Washington University in St. Louis, there is a new project in engineering science for a class on industrial design: the Interfacial Mechanical Interaction Transition in Iron and Steel (IMIT) system. We were lucky enough to work with a school that loved the math, physics, and technology we had created but felt lacked the proper mindset to tackle each area of mechanical engineering, from welding to power, that gave us a good understanding of how it worked. My first attempt at a “reel” that put engineers from across the world in the role of mentor-member would be more than a little bit rigorous in terms of the form and configuration of how each team should engage. One of the immediate goals was to introduce many of the young engineers (some of them being from Stanford) to working in the field, so they could participate in the design and build of the models. In doing that, I developed “onsite” learning environments, the ability for students to take-a-coupon or a one-off class and be able to place their confidence, knowledge and skills in their field – particularly with learning environments that are difficult for a real study environment to explore. I also tried to figure out how to measure and measure the progress I have been making in terms of the design quality/wisdom of each school student and how well they know the technology when it is applied to a critical application such as that of building a steel-vaulting plant or assembly fluid. I created an embedded library of classes and applied techniques. It was very useful to see how I was testing the system before one focused on the design or building, getting a good sense of the overall relationship between the students and field. One key was that the students were often talking about different topics and backgrounds, and what they were learning to understand.
